Tombstone Court House State Historic Park

The City of Tombstone and the Tombstone Chamber of Commerce are currently operating the Tombstone Court House State Historic Park. The park is open everyday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, although the schedule may change slightly during the holidays. This park is a great opportunity to catch a glimpse of what it was like in the famous city of Tombstone, AZ, during the 1880s. The town is of course home to Wyatt Earp and some of the most famous western stories that we have. It is a must-visit if you are going to be anywhere near Tombstone anytime soon.

Brief History of the Tombstone Court House State Historic Park

The court house was built in 1882, and it was built in the shape of a Roman cross. It is a Victorian two story structure that once housed the office of the treasurer, sheriff, the jail, and the courtrooms that served Cochise County. The court house was built for the price of $50,000 as a symbol of both the law and style of the time period. The jail could be found on the bottom floor toward the rear of the building.

Eventually the county of Bisbee was overgrowing Cochise County, and the county seat was given to them. By that time it was 1929, and by 1931, the last county office left the court house. There was an attempt to create a hotel out of the building in the 1940s, but that didn’t go so well. Finally a restoration team got a hold of it and returned it to its former glory.

Now it sits as a museum and a piece of history that everyone can come and see. The park even comes with a gift shop, restrooms, a museum, exhibits, and it has picnic areas that are shaded as well. If you are seeking the rich authentic history of the Wild Wild West, this is a great place to start your journey.
